Press Release: A New Store Coming to Somerville

A new store is making its way to 96 N. Gaston Ave.

The Artist Apothecary will open its doors on April 11, bringing together elements of an artisan shop, a maker-driven collective, and a thoughtfully curated selection of vintage and secondhand goods.

Owned and operated by Somerville resident Jeanette Starrick, the shop features creative works by local artists alongside a rotating mix of vintage finds, secondhand pieces, and artistic oddities, many of which have been restored or transformed by hand. A small selection of traditional art supplies are also available for those who feel inspired to create something of their own.

Inside, the shelves feel like unlocking a cabinet of curiosities, filled with objects that invite a closer look and reward time spent wandering. Vinyl records are reshaped into flowing bowls, illustrated trays carry subtle nods to folklore and symbolism, and keepsake boxes and sculptural floral pieces transform familiar materials into something more personal.

The concept for The Artist Apothecary grew out of Starrick’s experience participating in local craft fairs, where artists often invest significant time and effort into a single day of selling.

“I understand how much time, effort, and hard work goes into being a vendor at a craft fair,” Starrick said. “Making the items is the fun part, but everything else, including setting up, staging, selling, and breaking down, happens in just a few hours. The Artist Apothecary gives creative people another way to share and sell their work, without being limited by turnout or weather.”

Starrick said the goal is to bring that same sense of community found at local markets into a more permanent setting, where artists can showcase their work and connect with customers over time.

For artists and makers, the shop provides an ongoing place to display their work and connect with new audiences. It offers a level of continuity that is often difficult to achieve through one-day or weekend markets.

The shop will appeal to visitors who prefer to experience it at their own pace, with time to look closely and explore without a set plan. Many will be drawn to handmade goods, one-of-a-kind secondhand finds, and unique pieces that carry a sense of history or intention. It is a place for people who value handcrafted items, who appreciate the care and craftsmanship behind each piece, and who choose to support local artists over mass-produced items shipped from warehouses.

Sustainability also plays a role in the shop’s approach.

“Helping the environment has always been important to me,” Starrick said. “The more items that we can keep out of our already overflowing landfills, the better the planet will be for future generations.”

Starrick also hopes the shop will help extend Somerville’s small-business energy beyond the downtown core. With continued development in the area, including the new Emergency Services Building across the street, The Artist Apothecary brings a creative retail presence to this side of Somerville.
